ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
Why this applies to Empagliflozin
Empagliflozin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Garlic interacts with.
Clinical research suggests that garlic and garlic extract lower blood glucose levels in healthy and diabetic individuals.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: garlic itself may nudge your blood sugar down a little. Empagliflozin (Jardiance) already works to lower blood sugar by helping your kidneys flush extra sugar out in your urine. So when you stack a garlic supplement on top, the two could add together and push your numbers a bit lower than expected.
The good news is this is mostly theoretical, and Jardiance alone rarely causes serious low blood sugar unless you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea. Garlic in your cooking is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated supplements are more of a question mark. If you take them, keep an eye out for shakiness, sweating, or dizziness, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Empagliflozin page
“Almost everything on this page can nudge blood sugar in someone taking empagliflozin (Jardiance) for type 2 diabetes, heart failure, or kidney protection, and two entries deserve genuine caution before anything else. Siberian cocklebur has caused severe low blood sugar in humans and should not be combined with any glucose-lowering medi…”

About Garlic
What is Garlic?
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Heart health
- Immune support and common cold
- Antimicrobial uses
Garlic is a common food and supplement that may modestly help with blood pressure and cholesterol, though the evidence is mixed and effects are usually small. It is generally safe in food amounts, but concentrated supplements can cause stomach upset, breath and body odor, and a higher risk of bleeding. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before taking garlic supplements, especially if you take other medicines.
About Empagliflozin
What Is Empagliflozin Used For?
Brand name: Jardiance
Jardiance (empagliflozin) tablets are approved for several important uses in adults. It reduces the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization in adults with heart failure. It also slows the progression of chronic kidney disease by reducing the risk of serious kidney decline, end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization. In adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, Jardiance reduces the risk of cardiovascular death.
Jardiance is also used — alongside diet and exercise — to improve blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes in adults and children aged 10 and older. It is not recommended for blood sugar control in type 1 diabetes (it may raise the risk of a dangerous condition called diabetic ketoacidosis) or in type 2 diabetes patients with severely reduced kidney function.

Empagliflozin Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Empagliflozin as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Garlic — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
