Balsalazide Disodium falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the thing with glucomannan and balsalazide: that thick gel the fiber forms in your gut can grab onto pills and slow or block how much medicine actually gets absorbed. With balsalazide, less absorption could mean it doesn't calm your colon as well, so you might notice your ulcerative colitis acting up again with more diarrhea, cramping, rectal bleeding, or belly pain.

This is mostly a theoretical and timing concern, not a dangerous reaction, and a simple fix usually helps: separate the two. A common suggestion is to take your balsalazide first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your glucomannan. Run this by your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially since keeping your colitis under control matters.

What Is Balsalazide Used For?

Brand names: Colazal, Giazo

Balsalazide disodium capsules (sold as Balsalazide Disodium and Colazal) are used to treat mildly to moderately active ulcerative colitis — a condition where the lining of the colon becomes inflamed and causes symptoms like diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and abdominal pain. This use is approved for adults and for children ages 5 through 17.

The established treatment period is up to 8 weeks in children (ages 5–17) and up to 12 weeks in adults. Safety and effectiveness beyond those time frames have not been established in clinical trials.
