Why this applies to Butorphanol

Butorphanol falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's something worth knowing about this pairing. Glucomannan is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when it's sitting in your stomach and gut it can grab onto medicines you swallow and slow down how much your body absorbs. So the concern is mostly about oral forms of butorphanol getting partly blocked, which could mean less pain relief than you expect.

Now here's the good news for most readers: butorphanol is usually given as an injection or nasal spray, not a pill, so this fiber interaction wouldn't really apply to those forms. If you ever do take an oral version, a simple fix is to space them out, taking the butorphanol first and waiting 30 to 60 minutes before the glucomannan. The evidence here is fairly limited, so don't be alarmed, but do run your specific routine by your pharmacist.

What Is Butorphanol Injection Used For?

Butorphanol Tartrate Injection is used to manage pain severe enough to require an opioid when other treatments are not adequate. It is also used as a preoperative or pre-anesthetic medication and as a supplement to balanced anesthesia during surgical procedures.

Butorphanol Tartrate Injection is also indicated for relief of pain during labor in patients at full term in early labor. Because of serious risks including addiction, misuse, and overdose, it is reserved for situations where alternative treatments are ineffective or not tolerated.
