Why this applies to Clobazam

Clobazam falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the thing with glucomannan: it's a thick fiber that turns into a gel in your gut, and that gel can grab onto a pill and slow down how much of it gets absorbed. Since clobazam is taken by mouth to help control seizures, there's a real worry that swallowing it at the same time as glucomannan could mean less of the medicine actually reaching your bloodstream.

For a seizure medicine, even a small drop in absorption matters, because steady blood levels are what keep seizures in check. Lower levels could mean breakthrough seizures. The simple fix that experts suggest is spacing them out: take your clobazam first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the glucomannan. Please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two so they can help you time it safely.

Clobazam is used as an add-on (adjunctive) treatment for seizures linked to Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS), a severe form of childhood-onset epilepsy. It is approved for patients 2 years of age and older.

This indication applies to all available forms: Sympazan (dissolving oral film), Onfi (tablets and oral suspension), and generic clobazam tablets and oral suspension.
