Why this applies to Clomiphene

Clomiphene falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the gist with Clomiphene and glucomannan. Because glucomannan turns into a thick gel in your stomach, it can act like a sponge and slow down or trap pills you swallow at the same time. The worry is that less of your Clomiphene gets absorbed into your bloodstream, which could mean a weaker effect on triggering ovulation. Since you're taking this to help you conceive, you really don't want anything quietly dialing down how well it works.

The good news is this is easy to manage. Keep the timing separate: take your Clomiphene first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your glucomannan. The evidence here is modest and mostly from other drugs, so don't panic, but do run your plan by your pharmacist or fertility doctor to be safe.

Glucomannan is a soluble fiber from the konjac root that swells into a gel in your stomach, which may help with mild weight loss, constipation, and modestly lowering cholesterol. It is generally well tolerated when taken with plenty of water, but it must be taken carefully because it can swell and cause choking or blockage if not swallowed properly. What Is Clomiphene Used For?

Brand names: Serophene, Clomid

Clomiphene tablets are indicated for women who are not ovulating normally and want to become pregnant. It is most likely to help women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), amenorrhea-galactorrhea syndrome, psychogenic amenorrhea, post-oral-contraceptive amenorrhea, and certain cases of secondary amenorrhea (absent periods of unknown cause).

Before starting treatment, other barriers to pregnancy — such as thyroid disorders, adrenal disorders, high prolactin levels, or male factor infertility — must be ruled out or treated. Clomiphene is not recommended for use in combination with other ovulation-inducing drugs or for IVF programs, and it is not approved for treating male infertility.
