Why this applies to Ezetimibe

Ezetimibe falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the practical concern with pairing glucomannan with ezetimibe (Zetia). Glucomannan is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and that gel can physically trap a medication in your gut and slow or block how much of it gets absorbed. With ezetimibe, that's a bit of a double whammy, because ezetimibe works right inside your intestine to block cholesterol absorption. A fiber gel sitting in the same place could reduce how much drug reaches its target, meaning less cholesterol lowering than you expect.

This is mostly theoretical and based on small studies with other oral drugs, not ezetimibe specifically, so don't panic. A simple fix helps a lot: take your ezetimibe first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your glucomannan. Run the timing by your pharmacist or doctor to be sure.

Glucomannan is a soluble fiber from the konjac root that swells into a gel in your stomach, which may help with mild weight loss, constipation, and modestly lowering cholesterol. It is generally well tolerated when taken with plenty of water, but it must be taken carefully because it can swell and cause choking or blockage if not swallowed properly. About Ezetimibe

What Is Ezetimibe Used For?

Brand name: Zetia

Ezetimibe is used to reduce elevated LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), total cholesterol, and related blood fats as an addition to a cholesterol-lowering diet. It is approved for adults and, in certain situations, for children 9 or 10 years of age and older, depending on the condition being treated.

Specific uses include: primary hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol from diet or genetics), mixed hyperlipidemia (when combined with fenofibrate), heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH — an inherited form of high cholesterol), homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH — a more severe inherited form), and homozygous familial sitosterolemia (a rare condition where the body absorbs too many plant sterols). Zetia is also specifically approved to lower LDL in pediatric patients 10 and older with HeFH or HoFH when combined with a statin.
