ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Ezetimibe
Ezetimibe falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Coffee Charcoal interacts with.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pair. Coffee charcoal acts like other forms of charcoal, meaning its porous surface can grab onto things in your gut, including medicine. If you swallow it around the same time as your ezetimibe (Zetia), it may soak up some of the drug before your body absorbs it, so you'd get less benefit. Since ezetimibe already works by blocking cholesterol absorption in the intestine, less drug getting through could mean weaker cholesterol lowering over time.
This is a theoretical concern based on how charcoal behaves, not proven studies, so don't panic. A simple fix is spacing them out by at least two hours. Run the timing past your pharmacist or doctor to be safe.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ezetimibe page
“Almost everything that interacts with ezetimibe (Zetia) works in the gut, and one entry calls for genuine care. Activated charcoal can soak up the drug before your body gets it, which for a cholesterol pill means quietly losing the protection you count on.”

About Coffee Charcoal
What is Coffee Charcoal?
- Diarrhea
- Inflammatory bowel conditions
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Mild digestive upset
- Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)
Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.
About Ezetimibe
What Is Ezetimibe Used For?
Brand name: Zetia
Ezetimibe is used alongside a cholesterol-lowering diet to reduce LDL ("bad") cholesterol, total cholesterol, and related blood fats. It can be used alone or combined with a statin or fenofibrate depending on the condition being treated.
Zetia (a brand of ezetimibe) is specifically approved to lower LDL cholesterol in adults and children 10 and older with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (an inherited high-cholesterol condition), in adults with mixed hyperlipidemia (combined high cholesterol and triglycerides) when combined with fenofibrate, and in adults and children 10 and older with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (a severe inherited form). Ezetimibe tablets are also used to reduce elevated plant sterols (sitosterol and campesterol) in adults and children 9 and older with homozygous familial sitosterolemia, a rare inherited condition.
