Why this applies to Meperdine

Meperdine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the practical concern when you pair glucomannan with Demerol (meperidine). This fiber soaks up water and turns into a thick gel in your gut. That gel can physically slow or trap whatever else is in your stomach, so a meperidine tablet taken at the same time may not be absorbed as fully. The likely result is a weaker pain-relieving effect than you'd expect, not a stronger one.

This is mostly based on small studies with other oral medicines, so it's a reasonable concern rather than a proven problem with Demerol specifically. An easy fix is timing: take your meperidine first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your glucomannan. Always run this by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
