Methadone falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the simple version. Glucomannan is a thick fiber that soaks up water and turns into a gel in your stomach. That gel can grab onto medicine you swallow and slow down or reduce how much your body absorbs. With methadone, that could mean less of your dose actually getting into your bloodstream, which may leave your pain less controlled or, if you're in a treatment program, let withdrawal symptoms creep in.

This concern is mostly based on small studies with other oral drugs, not methadone itself, so it's more theoretical than proven. Still, since steady methadone levels matter a lot, it's worth being careful. A simple fix is spacing them out: take your methadone first, then wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before the glucomannan. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Methadone

What Is Methadone Used For?

Brand name: Dolophine

Methadone treats severe and persistent pain that requires daily, around-the-clock, long-term opioid treatment and cannot be managed adequately with other options. It is available in several forms for this use, including oral solution, oral tablets, oral concentrate, and injectable forms (intravenous, intramuscular, and subcutaneous). Injectable methadone is not approved for outpatient pain treatment — it is reserved for hospitalized patients unable to take oral medication.

Methadone is also used for the detoxification and maintenance treatment of opioid addiction (dependence on heroin or other morphine-like drugs). Oral forms — including tablets, dispersible tablets (such as Methadose Dispersible and DISKETS), and oral concentrates (such as Methadone Hydrochloride Intensol™, Methadose, and others) — are approved for this use. By law, methadone for opioid addiction treatment must be dispensed only by certified opioid treatment programs. Injectable methadone is not approved for outpatient addiction treatment.
