Why this applies to Mometasone

Mometasone falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the good news for your situation. The interaction we have on file is about glucomannan slowing down the absorption of oral medicines, because the fiber gel can grab onto a drug in your gut and keep some of it from soaking in. But the mometasone you're asking about (Elocon) is a cream or ointment you put right on your skin. Since it never travels through your stomach, this fiber interaction really doesn't apply to it.

So you can use your topical mometasone for that itchy, red, or scaly skin without worrying about glucomannan getting in the way. The one exception would be if you take an oral or inhaled form of mometasone (like Asmanex). In that case, it's smart to space them apart and check with your pharmacist.

Glucomannan is a soluble fiber from the konjac root that swells into a gel in your stomach, which may help with mild weight loss, constipation, and modestly lowering cholesterol. Mometasone Furoate topical products are used to relieve the inflammation and itching (pruritus) that come with corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses — a broad category of skin conditions that respond to steroid treatment.

Mometasone Furoate Topical Solution (Lotion) is specifically indicated for these skin conditions in patients 12 years of age and older. Mometasone Furoate cream may be used in adults and in children 2 years of age and older.
