Why this applies to Nabumetone

Nabumetone falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the simple version: glucomannan is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when it's sitting in your stomach at the same time as nabumetone, it can grab onto the pill and slow or reduce how much of it your body actually absorbs. Interestingly, nabumetone is a prodrug, meaning your liver has to convert it into its active form (6-MNA) to relieve pain and inflammation. So if less of the drug gets in to begin with, you may simply get less arthritis relief than you expect, with stiffness or aching that isn't well controlled.

This is more theoretical than proven for nabumetone specifically, so don't panic. A practical fix is good spacing: take your nabumetone first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before your glucomannan. Always run timing changes by your pharmacist or doctor before adjusting anything.

Nabumetone tablets — available as generic nabumetone and as the brand Relafen DS — are used to relieve pain, swelling, and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

It is meant to be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest time needed. It is not approved for pain relief around coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) heart surgery.
