ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir Ritonavir
Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir Ritonavir falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: glucomannan is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when it's sitting in your stomach and gut it can grab onto pills and slow or reduce how much your body soaks up. With Technivie (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, and ritonavir), the worry is that you'd absorb a little less of your hepatitis C medicine. That matters because these drugs need steady, reliable levels to fully suppress the virus, and lower levels could mean a weaker punch against your infection.
This concern is mostly theoretical and based on other oral drugs, not Technivie itself, so don't panic. A safe habit is simple spacing: take your Technivie first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your glucomannan. Please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Glucomannan
What is Glucomannan?
- Weight loss and appetite control
- Constipation
- High cholesterol
- Blood sugar support
- Digestive health
Glucomannan is a soluble fiber from the konjac root that swells into a gel in your stomach, which may help with mild weight loss, constipation, and modestly lowering cholesterol. It is generally well tolerated when taken with plenty of water, but it must be taken carefully because it can swell and cause choking or blockage if not swallowed properly. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you have a health condition or take medicines.
About Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir, and Ritonavir
What Is Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir, and Ritonavir Used For?
Brand name: Technivie
-
The combination of ombitasvir, paritaprevir, and ritonavir is usually used in combination with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol), but sometimes it is used alone to treat a certain type of chronic (long-term) hepatitis C infection (swelling of the liver caused by a virus). Ombitasvir is a hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS5A inhibitor. It works by stopping the virus that causes hepatitis C from spreading inside the body. Paritaprevir is a protease inhibitor. It works by decreasing the amount of HCV in the body. Ritonavir is a protease inhibitor. It helps to increase the amount of paritaprevir in the body so that the medication will have a greater effect. It is not known if ombitasvir, paritaprevir, or ritonavir prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
