Why this applies to Psyllium (OTC drug)

Psyllium (OTC drug) falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's an interesting one, because both glucomannan and psyllium are soluble fibers that swell into a thick gel in your gut. Stacking two bulking fibers together isn't really a metabolism issue, it's more about how they behave in your stomach and intestines. Taking them at the same time can make things very thick and slow-moving, which may lead to bloating, gas, cramping, or even a feeling of fullness or blockage if you don't drink enough water.

The bigger practical concern is that this gel can grab onto other oral medicines and reduce how well they're absorbed. So space your fibers and your other pills apart, usually take other medicines first and your fiber 30 to 60 minutes later, and drink plenty of fluid. Check with your pharmacist before combining them.
