Why this applies to Sevoflurane

Sevoflurane falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the good news: this particular interaction almost certainly doesn't apply to you. Sevoflurane is an inhaled anesthetic gas that an anesthesiologist gives you through a breathing mask or tube during surgery. You don't swallow it, so the worry about glucomannan slowing down the absorption of a pill in your stomach simply doesn't fit here.

The interaction on file is really about oral medicines, where glucomannan's thick gel can trap a tablet and reduce how much gets absorbed. Since sevoflurane bypasses your gut entirely, glucomannan won't change how it works. That said, if you have surgery coming up, mention any supplements you take to your surgical team, since fiber and a full stomach can matter for anesthesia planning.

Glucomannan is a soluble fiber from the konjac root that swells into a gel in your stomach, which may help with mild weight loss, constipation, and modestly lowering cholesterol.
