Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's some good news that should put your mind at ease: this particular interaction doesn't really apply to sevoflurane. The concern on file is about charcoal binding to drugs you swallow and blocking their absorption in your gut. Sevoflurane isn't taken by mouth at all. It's an inhaled anesthetic gas given by a specialist during surgery, and it goes straight into your lungs and bloodstream, completely bypassing your digestive tract.

Because coffee charcoal works inside your intestines, it simply can't grab onto a gas you breathe in. So there's no meaningful overlap here. That said, always tell your anesthesia team about every supplement you take before any procedure, just so they have the full picture.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Sevoflurane page

“Fever bark is the supplement I would want disclosed first before anyone receives sevoflurane (Ultane), the inhaled anesthetic used during surgery. Its reserpine content has been tied to unstable heart function and circulation under general anesthesia, earning one of two major ratings among the 22 ingredients on this page.”

About Coffee Charcoal

What is Coffee Charcoal?

  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)

Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.
