Empagliflozin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Glucosamine interacts with.

Despite initial concerns, it is unlikely that glucosamine will interfere with the effects of antidiabetes drugs.
In vitro and animal research has suggested that glucosamine might increase insulin resistance or decrease insulin production. This has raised concerns that taking glucosamine might worsen diabetes and decrease the effectiveness of diabetes drugs. However, clinical research suggests that glucosamine does not have adverse effects on blood glucose or glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) in healthy, obese, or type 2 diabetes patients.

Good news here: if you take glucosamine for your joints while you're on empagliflozin (Jardiance) for diabetes or heart protection, the two are very unlikely to clash. There was an old theory, based mostly on lab and animal studies, that glucosamine might raise insulin resistance or nudge blood sugar upward, which in theory could make a diabetes drug work less well. But when researchers actually tested this in people, including folks with type 2 diabetes, glucosamine did not meaningfully change blood sugar or A1C.

So in practice, glucosamine shouldn't blunt how well your empagliflozin lowers your sugar. Since everyone's diabetes is a little different, it's still smart to keep an eye on your home glucose readings when starting anything new, and check in with your pharmacist or doctor if you notice numbers drifting.

Glucosamine is a natural compound found in cartilage and joint fluid, and it is one of the most popular supplements for osteoarthritis, especially of the knee. The evidence is mixed, with some people getting modest relief while others get little to no benefit. It is generally well tolerated, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you have a shellfish allergy or diabetes.

About Empagliflozin

What Is Empagliflozin Used For?

Brand name: Jardiance

Jardiance (empagliflozin) tablets are approved for several important uses in adults. It reduces the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization in adults with heart failure. It also slows the progression of chronic kidney disease by reducing the risk of serious kidney decline, end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization. In adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, Jardiance reduces the risk of cardiovascular death.

Jardiance is also used — alongside diet and exercise — to improve blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes in adults and children aged 10 and older. It is not recommended for blood sugar control in type 1 diabetes (it may raise the risk of a dangerous condition called diabetic ketoacidosis) or in type 2 diabetes patients with severely reduced kidney function.
