Gluten-free Diet and Omalizumab

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Omalizumab and Gluten-free Diet in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — research on Gluten-free Diet alongside specific medications may be limited.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Gluten-free Diet at all — not against Omalizumab, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

Gluten-free Diet is an eating pattern rather than something you take. Ask your pharmacist or doctor before changing how you eat while on a prescribed medicine: some medicines are dosed around meals, and a change in diet can change how they work. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Gluten-free Diet safety at a glance

What to actually watch for

What Gluten-free Diet Itself Has Been Linked To

This is not an interaction — nothing below involves Omalizumab. It is the side-effect record for Gluten-free Diet on its own, from the licensed Natural Medicines monograph. If something new turns up after you add Gluten-free Diet, this list is the first place to look. One entry is worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • Low mood / Anemia Worth acting on Additional detail

“Some research reports iron deficiency (anemia), malnutrition, anxiety and depression in people using the gluten free diet; however causality of these symptoms is unclear.”

Gluten-free Diet · Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, reported in anemia.

  • Anxiety or restlessness Additional detail

Recorded for Gluten-free Diet in the same Natural Medicines adverse-effect record shown under Low mood / Anemia above.

Everything above comes from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record for Gluten-free Diet — expand a row for the licensed statement it rests on. We read the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Omalizumab’s FDA label too, and the two lists don’t meaningfully overlap — which is why no Omalizumab column appears here.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Omalizumab page

“None of the 53 supplements on file for omalizumab (Xolair) carries a major rating, so this is a list to read with steady attention rather than alarm. Xolair treats allergic asthma and chronic hives by calming part of the immune system, and every entry here pulls the other way: these are immune-stimulating products, echinacea and astrag…”

About Gluten-free Diet

What is Gluten-free Diet?

  • Celiac disease
  • Non-celiac gluten sensitivity
  • Wheat allergy
  • Dermatitis herpetiformis
  • Digestive symptoms like bloating or diarrhea

A gluten-free diet removes wheat, barley, rye, and related grains. It is the proven, necessary treatment for celiac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis, and it helps some people with wheat allergy or non-celiac gluten sensitivity. For people without these conditions, there is no strong evidence that going gluten-free improves health, so talk with your doctor before making big diet changes.

Whole-food eating pattern; gluten-free packaged foods, flours, and breads

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Gluten-free Diet is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Gluten-free Diet record says about it on its own.

Gluten-free Diet: dosing

A gluten-free diet is not a pill, so there is no "dose." Instead, the goal for people who need it is to completely avoid gluten from wheat, barley, rye, and related grains, including hidden sources in sauces, processed foods, and even some medicines and supplements.Look for products labeled certified gluten-free, and read ingredient lists carefully. Working with a registered dietitian is the best way to follow the diet correctly while keeping your nutrition balanced.

About Omalizumab Injection

What Is Omalizumab Injection Used For?

Brand name: Xolair

Xolair is used for several allergy-driven conditions. It treats moderate to severe persistent asthma in adults and children 6 and older whose symptoms aren't controlled by inhaled steroids alone and who test positive for a year-round airborne allergen. It is also used as an add-on maintenance treatment for chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (ongoing sinus inflammation with polyp growths) in adults 18 and older who haven't responded well to nasal corticosteroids.

Xolair is also approved to reduce allergic reactions — including anaphylaxis — from accidental food exposure in adults and children aged 1 and older with IgE-mediated food allergy. It must be used alongside strict food avoidance, and it is not a substitute for emergency treatment like epinephrine. Finally, Xolair treats chronic spontaneous urticaria (persistent hives with no identified trigger) in adults and adolescents 12 and older who still have symptoms despite antihistamine treatment.
