Here's the gist: guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when you swallow it with a pill, that gel can trap part of the medicine in your gut so less of it actually gets absorbed. With the oral form of cladribine (Mavenclad), getting the full dose into your bloodstream really matters, because the whole point is hitting a precise target dose to quiet down your immune system in MS. If guar gum blunts that absorption, you could get less benefit than your neurologist is counting on.

This is a possible interaction based on modest evidence with other oral drugs, not cladribine specifically, so don't panic. A simple fix is spacing: take your cladribine first, then wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before any guar gum. Please run the timing past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Cladribine Used For?

Brand names: Leustatin, Mavenclad

Cladribine tablets (brand name Mavenclad) are used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) in adults — specifically relapsing-remitting MS and active secondary progressive MS. Because of its significant safety profile, it is generally reserved for patients who haven't responded well to, or can't tolerate, other MS medicines. It is not recommended for clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), a first episode that may or may not lead to MS.

Cladribine injection (given intravenously) is a separate product used to treat active hairy cell leukemia — a rare blood cancer — in patients who have clinically significant anemia, low white blood cell counts, low platelets, or disease-related symptoms.
