Here's the simple version: guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when you swallow a concentrated dose it can trap or slow down other pills sitting in your stomach. With codeine, that may mean your body absorbs a little less of the dose, or absorbs it more slowly, so your pain relief or cough control could feel weaker or come on later than you expect.

The good news is this is easy to manage. The usual advice is to space them out, taking your codeine first and waiting about 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum. Food amounts of fiber are unlikely to cause trouble; it's the concentrated supplement that matters most. Since pain control is personal, run your timing past your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.
