Here's something worth knowing: dexmedetomidine (Precedex, Igalmi) usually isn't a pill you swallow. It's given as an IV drip in the hospital, or as a small tablet that dissolves under your tongue. Because guar gum's main concern is slowing the absorption of swallowed oral drugs in the stomach and gut, it really shouldn't have much effect on how dexmedetomidine works through those routes.

So while our database flags guar gum for oral medications in general, this particular drug doesn't fit that picture well. If you're ever given a form you swallow, separating doses (guar gum 30 to 60 minutes after) is a sensible habit. Since dexmedetomidine is typically a supervised hospital medicine, your care team is already managing this, but it never hurts to mention any supplements to your pharmacist.
