ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Fruquintinib
Fruquintinib falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Guar Gum interacts with.
Clinical research shows that guar gum reduces or slows absorption of medications such as penicillin and metformin. To avoid changes in absorption, take guar gum 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the concern with pairing guar gum and Fruquintinib (Fruzaqla). Because guar gum forms a thick gel in your stomach, it can grab onto pills and slow or reduce how much of the drug your body actually absorbs. Fruquintinib is an oral cancer medicine (a kinase inhibitor used for certain colorectal cancers), and it works as-is, so less absorption simply means less drug getting into your system and possibly a weaker effect against the cancer.
This interaction is based on studies with other oral drugs like metformin and penicillin, not fruquintinib itself, so it's a reasonable caution rather than a proven problem. A simple fix is spacing: take your fruquintinib first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum. Please run the timing by your oncology team or pharmacist before changing anything.

About Guar Gum
What is Guar Gum?
- Constipation and bowel regularity
- Diarrhea (as a stool bulking agent)
- Lowering cholesterol
- Blood sugar control
- Feeling full for weight management
Guar gum is a soluble, gel-forming fiber from the guar bean that may modestly help with cholesterol, blood sugar, and bowel regularity. It is generally safe in food amounts, but concentrated supplements can cause gas, bloating, and a risk of throat or gut blockage if not taken with enough water. Always take it with plenty of fluid and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
About Fruquintinib
What Is Fruquintinib Used For?
Brand name: Fruzaqla
Fruzaqla (fruquintinib) is used to treat adults with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) — colorectal cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. It is specifically for patients who have already been treated with several standard chemotherapy regimens and other targeted therapies.
Fruzaqla is intended for patients who have previously received fluoropyrimidine-, oxaliplatin-, and irinotecan-based chemotherapy, an anti-VEGF therapy, and — if their tumor is RAS wild-type and it is medically appropriate — an anti-EGFR therapy.
