Here's the simple version: guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber. When you swallow it, it can grab onto whatever else is in your stomach and slow down or lower how much of an oral medicine gets absorbed. With oral leucovorin, that means your body might take in less of it than intended.

Leucovorin is a form of folate that protects your healthy cells during methotrexate therapy (or helps reverse a methotrexate overdose), so getting the full dose really matters. If guar gum blunts its absorption, you could get less of that protection. The fix is easy spacing: take your leucovorin first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the guar gum. Since this drug is often part of cancer care, please run any fiber supplement past your oncology team or pharmacist before mixing the two.

Guar gum is a soluble, gel-forming fiber from the guar bean that may modestly help with cholesterol, blood sugar, and bowel regularity. It is generally safe in food amounts, but concentrated supplements can cause gas, bloating, and a risk of throat or gut blockage if not taken with enough water. Always take it with plenty of fluid and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Leucovorin

What Is Leucovorin Used For?

Brand name: Wellcovorin

Leucovorin is used to reduce the harmful effects of methotrexate when the body is having trouble clearing it, and to counteract accidental overdoses of folic acid antagonists or dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) inhibitors — drugs that block the body's ability to use folate. The oral tablet (Leucovorin Calcium) is approved for these uses in adults only. Vykoura injection is also approved to rescue adult and pediatric patients after high-dose methotrexate therapy.

Leucovorin Calcium tablets are approved to treat cerebral folate transport deficiency (FOLR1-CFTD), a rare genetic condition that prevents the brain from getting enough folate, in adults and children. Vykoura injection and leucovorin calcium injection are approved to treat megaloblastic anemia (low red blood cell counts caused by folate deficiency) when oral treatment isn't an option, and to be used alongside fluorouracil (5-FU) to treat metastatic colorectal cancer.
