Here's the thing about guar gum and your nilotinib (Tasigna): guar gum forms a thick gel in your stomach and gut, and that gel can grab onto pills and slow or reduce how much of the drug actually gets absorbed. With nilotinib, which is already a medication that your body absorbs in a fussy, somewhat unpredictable way, anything that lowers absorption could mean less of the drug reaching your blood. That matters because nilotinib needs steady levels to keep your leukemia in check, so weaker absorption could make it less effective over time.

This is a reasonable, fiber-related concern rather than a dangerous one, but I wouldn't take them at the same moment. A simple fix is spacing them apart (take guar gum at least 30 to 60 minutes after your nilotinib). Please run this by your pharmacist or oncologist first, since nilotinib timing and food rules are strict.

About Nilotinib

What Is Nilotinib Used For?

Brand name: Tasigna

  • Nilotinib is used to treat certain types of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML; a type of cancer of the white blood cells) who have recently found to have this condition in adults and children 1 year of age and older. It is also used to treat certain types of CML in adults whose disease could not be treated successfully with imatinib (Gleevec) or adults who cannot take imatinib because of side effects. Nilotinib is also used to treat certain types of CML in children 1 year of age or older whose disease could not be treated successfully with other tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapies or who cannot take these medications because of side effects. Nilotinib is in a class of medications called kinase inhibitors. It works by blocking the action of the abnormal protein that signals cancer cells to multiply. This helps to stop or slow the spread of cancer cells.
