Here's the thing to keep in mind with guar gum and Invega (paliperidone). Guar gum forms a thick gel in your stomach and gut, and that gel can grab onto medicine and slow down how much of it your body actually absorbs. With paliperidone, the worry is the opposite of an overdose: you could end up absorbing less of your dose, which may make it work less well at keeping your schizophrenia symptoms steady. Paliperidone isn't a prodrug, so less absorbed simply means weaker effect.

The simple fix is timing. Take your paliperidone first, then wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum, and drink plenty of water. Before changing anything, please check with your pharmacist or doctor, especially since staying on a steady dose matters a lot here.

What Is Paliperidone Used For?

Brand name: Invega

Paliperidone treats schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. The extended-release tablets (Invega and generic paliperidone) are approved for schizophrenia in adults and adolescents ages 12–17, and for schizoaffective disorder in adults.

Several injectable formulations are also available, each with specific roles. Invega Sustenna and Erzofri extended-release are once-monthly injections approved for schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder in adults. Invega Trinza is a once-every-3-month injection for schizophrenia in adults who have already been stabilized on a once-monthly paliperidone palmitate injection for at least four months. Invega Hafyera is a once-every-6-month injection for schizophrenia in adults already stabilized on a once-monthly or every-3-month paliperidone palmitate injection.
