Here's the thing to know: guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and that gel can grab onto pills in your stomach and slow or lower how much your body actually absorbs. The concern on file is that this could mean less of an oral medicine getting into your bloodstream, which might make it work less well. We see this with drugs like metformin and penicillin.

One important note for your specific question: the inhaled (aerosol) form of ribavirin goes straight into the lungs, so a fiber in your gut wouldn't affect it. This warning really applies to oral ribavirin capsules or tablets. If you take ribavirin by mouth, a smart habit is to separate it from guar gum by taking the fiber 30 to 60 minutes after your dose. Guar gum is a soluble, gel-forming fiber from the guar bean that may modestly help with cholesterol, blood sugar, and bowel regularity. It is generally safe in food amounts, but concentrated supplements can cause gas, bloating, and a risk of throat or gut blockage if not taken with enough water. About Ribavirin

What Is Ribavirin Used For?

Brand name: Virazole

Ribavirin comes in different forms for different uses. Ribavirin capsules are used in combination with interferon alfa-2b (pegylated or non-pegylated) to treat chronic hepatitis C (CHC) in patients 3 years and older with compensated liver disease. Ribavirin tablets are used in combination with PEGASYS® (peginterferon alfa-2a) to treat chronic hepatitis C in patients 5 years and older with compensated liver disease who have not previously been treated with interferon — including adults who also have HIV. Ribavirin for inhalation solution is a separate product used to treat hospitalized infants and young children with severe lower respiratory tract infections caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Ribavirin must never be used alone to treat hepatitis C — it only works as part of combination therapy. Only the most severe RSV infections requiring hospitalization should be treated with the inhaled form; mild RSV illness in children does not require this treatment.
