Here's the basic idea with guar gum and your Kisqali (ribociclib). Guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when you swallow it, it can grab onto pills in your stomach and slow or reduce how much of the medicine actually gets absorbed. We've seen this play out with drugs like metformin and penicillin. Ribociclib is the active drug itself (not a prodrug that needs activating), so if less gets absorbed, you may simply get less of the cancer-fighting benefit you're counting on.

This is a moderate, fairly easy fix: separate them. A common suggestion is to take guar gum about 30 to 60 minutes after your ribociclib, not at the same time. Since this is an important breast cancer treatment, please run the timing by your oncologist or pharmacist before adding any fiber supplement.

What Is Ribociclib Used For?

Brand name: Kisqali

Kisqali is used to treat adults with hormone receptor (HR)-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer. For early breast cancer (stage II or III, at high risk of recurrence), Kisqali is used together with an aromatase inhibitor as adjuvant treatment — meaning it's given after initial treatment to help reduce the chance the cancer comes back.

For advanced or metastatic breast cancer (cancer that has spread), Kisqali is used in combination with either an aromatase inhibitor or fulvestrant — either as the first hormone-based treatment or after the cancer has progressed on another hormone therapy.
