Here's the gist with rimantadine (Flumadine) and guar gum. Guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when you swallow it close to a pill, that gel can trap part of the medicine and slow or lower how much your body actually absorbs. For rimantadine, which works as-is and isn't a prodrug, that mostly means you could get less of it into your system, and a flu medicine needs steady, reliable levels to do its job preventing or treating influenza A.

The evidence here is moderate and comes from other oral drugs, not rimantadine specifically, so this is a reasonable precaution rather than a sure thing. A simple fix is spacing them out: take your rimantadine first, then the guar gum about 30 to 60 minutes later. When in doubt, run your timing past your pharmacist.

What Is Rimantadine Used For?

Brand name: Flumadine

Rimantadine Hydrochloride tablets are used to prevent and treat illness caused by influenza A virus in adults 17 years and older. When started within 48 hours of symptoms, it can shorten the duration of fever and body aches.

For children ages 1 to 16, Rimantadine Hydrochloride tablets are approved for prevention (prophylaxis) of influenza A only — not for treatment. It is not approved for any use in infants younger than 1 year.
