Here's something worth knowing if you take sevelamer (Renagel) along with guar gum. Guar gum forms a thick gel in your gut that can slow or block how some medicines are absorbed. With sevelamer this gets a little tricky, because sevelamer isn't meant to be absorbed into your blood at all. It works right there in your intestines, grabbing onto phosphorus from your food before it can be taken up. Both substances sit in the same space and like to bind things, so guar gum could interfere with how well sevelamer traps phosphorus.

The practical effect could be weaker phosphate control, meaning your phosphorus levels creep up. To stay safe, ask your pharmacist about spacing them apart and keep up with your routine bloodwork. Don't change anything on your own.

What Is Sevelamer Used For?

Brand name: Renagel

Sevelamer is used to control serum phosphorus (the level of phosphorus in your blood) in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are on dialysis. High phosphorus is a serious problem for dialysis patients and needs to be managed with medication and diet.

Sevelamer carbonate tablets and Renvela® (sevelamer carbonate) oral suspension are approved for adults and children 6 years of age and older. Sevelamer hydrochloride tablets are indicated for adults with CKD on dialysis; their safety and effectiveness in CKD patients not on dialysis have not been studied.
