Here's the thing about guar gum: it forms a thick gel in your gut that can grab onto things passing through, including some medicines. With ursodiol, the worry is that this gel may slow or reduce how much of the drug your body actually absorbs. Since ursodiol works right in your digestive system and bile to slowly dissolve cholesterol gallstones or ease the bile buildup in primary biliary cholangitis, getting less of it could mean it simply doesn't work as well over time.

This isn't a dangerous reaction, just a timing issue. A simple fix is to space them apart, taking guar gum about 30 to 60 minutes after your ursodiol. Food amounts of guar gum are unlikely to matter, but concentrated fiber supplements can. Run the timing by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Ursodiol

What Is Ursodiol Used For?

Brand name: Actigall

Ursodiol capsules (including Reltone, Ursolign, and generic ursodiol capsules) are used to dissolve certain types of gallstones — specifically small, non-calcified cholesterol stones — in people who cannot have or prefer not to have gallbladder surgery. Capsules are also used to prevent gallstones from forming in people who are losing weight rapidly.

Ursodiol tablets — including Urso 250, Urso Forte, and generic ursodiol tablets — are indicated for the treatment of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), a chronic liver disease that damages the bile ducts inside the liver.
