Here's the thing about guar gum and Valganciclovir (Valcyte): that thick fiber gel it forms can grab onto pills in your gut and slow or reduce how much medicine you actually absorb. We've seen this happen with drugs like metformin and penicillin, so it's a reasonable concern here too. For Valcyte, getting less into your system matters, because it's working to keep CMV in check during a transplant or with AIDS. Soaking up less could mean weaker antiviral coverage.

You don't have to give up the fiber. A simple fix is timing: take your Valganciclovir first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the guar gum. Please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

About Valganciclovir

What Is Valganciclovir Used For?

Brand name: Valcyte

Valganciclovir treats CMV retinitis — a viral infection that can damage the retina and threaten vision — in adults with AIDS. It is also used to prevent CMV disease in adults who have had a kidney, heart, or kidney-pancreas transplant and are at high risk for infection.

In children, valganciclovir is used to prevent CMV disease in pediatric kidney transplant patients ages 4 months to 16 years, and in pediatric heart transplant patients ages 1 month to 16 years. The oral solution form is specifically indicated for these pediatric uses.
