Here's some good news for this particular pairing. The interaction on file is about guar gum slowing how the gut soaks up oral medicines, like metformin or penicillin. But Relenza (zanamivir) isn't a pill you swallow. It's a powder you breathe in through an inhaler device, so it goes straight to your airways and lungs rather than through your stomach and intestines.

Because guar gum's gel works in the gut and zanamivir bypasses the gut entirely, this fiber really shouldn't change how well your flu medicine works. If you ever take a different flu medicine that is a pill, the general rule is to take guar gum 30 to 60 minutes after it. When in doubt, your pharmacist can confirm.

What Is Zanamivir Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand name: Relenza

Relenza (zanamivir) inhalation powder is used to treat uncomplicated, acute influenza A and B in adults and children aged 7 and older — but only when symptoms have been present for no more than 2 days. The sooner treatment starts, the better.

Relenza is also used to help prevent (prophylax) influenza in adults and children aged 5 and older, including in household settings where someone is sick and in broader community outbreaks. It is not a substitute for your annual flu vaccine, and it has not been shown to prevent influenza in nursing home residents.
