ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Aspirin, Caffeine
Acetaminophen, Aspirin, Caffeine falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Hesperidin interacts with.
Animal research suggests that hesperetin, a bioflavonoid aglycone derivative of hesperidin, may have antiplatelet activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
The piece that matters here is the aspirin in your Excedrin. Aspirin already thins the blood a little by making platelets less sticky, which is part of how it eases pain and inflammation. Hesperidin, a citrus flavonoid, may have a mild antiplatelet effect of its own, so in theory the two together could nudge your bleeding risk up a notch. That might show up as easier bruising, a nosebleed, or a cut that takes longer to stop.
I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's theoretical, based mostly on animal lab work, not real patient cases. Everyday citrus fruit won't be an issue. If you take a concentrated hesperidin supplement regularly alongside aspirin, just give your pharmacist or doctor a quick heads-up.
- Jin, Y. R., Han, X. H., Zhang, Y. H., Lee, J. J., Lim, Y., Chung, J. H., and Yun, Y. P. Antiplatelet activity of hesperetin, a bioflavonoid, is mainly mediated by inhibition of PLC-gamma2 phosphorylation and cyclooxygenase-1 activity. Atherosclerosis 200
