Drug & supplement interaction

Hirudotherapy + Lioresal

Lioresal brand name: Lioresal Injection.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Hirudotherapy and Lioresal in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Hirudotherapy and Lioresal

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Lioresal and Hirudotherapy in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — research on Hirudotherapy alongside specific medications may be limited.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Hirudotherapy at all — not against Lioresal, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

Hirudotherapy is a treatment rather than something you take. Tell whoever provides it which medicines you use, and ask your prescriber whether it is appropriate for your health and treatment. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Hirudotherapy safety at a glance

Hirudotherapy overall Use caution Should only be performed by trained practitioners using medical-grade leeches due to infection and bleeding risks.
Pregnancy Avoid Not enough safety data; the bleeding and infection risks make it best avoided in pregnancy.
Breastfeeding Avoid Safety during breastfeeding is unknown, so it is best avoided unless a doctor advises otherwise.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Hirudotherapy and Lioresal May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so having Hirudotherapy while taking the medicine can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do. 3 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • Anemia / Bleeding or bruising Worth acting on Additional detail

    Hirudotherapy

“Topically, hirudotherapy can cause prolonged bleeding and anemia. In a case report, a young adult male presented with neck bleeding after self-applying leeches for acne. Bleeding was controlled by suturing. A case series in critically ill pediatric patients describes bleeding that led to hirudotherapy discontinuation in 5 of 7 cases, and 4 of the patients expired secondary to multiorgan failure.”

Less often, it can cause necrotic ulcers, keloid formation, allergic or irritant contact dermatitis, and skin infections. Use of leeches can sometimes cause infections with Aeromonas hydrophila, which is found in the leech gut, and also with parasites.”

Questions About Hirudotherapy or Lioresal

These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers Hirudotherapy or Lioresal, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Lioresal

This page covers Hirudotherapy only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Lioresal page lists 10 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Procaine (major), Biofeedback (moderate), Dendrobium (moderate), Ginkgo (moderate) and Lithium (moderate).

By severity: 1 major · 9 moderate.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Lioresal page

“Lioresal is baclofen, a muscle relaxant prescribed for spasticity, and I would treat its supplement list with genuine care. Of the ten ingredients on file, six, including everyday picks like melatonin and ginkgo, may lower the seizure threshold, an added worry with a drug whose abrupt changes can already provoke seizures.”

About Hirudotherapy

What is Hirudotherapy?

  • Reconstructive and plastic surgery (relieving blood congestion in reattached tissue)
  • Osteoarthritis and joint pain
  • Circulation problems
  • Varicose veins
  • Traditional treatment for various inflammatory conditions

Hirudotherapy is the medical use of living leeches placed on the skin to draw blood and release saliva compounds that thin blood and ease congestion. It has a real, accepted role in some surgical settings (such as saving reattached fingers or skin flaps), but evidence for most other uses is limited. It should only be done by trained professionals because of risks of infection and bleeding.

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Hirudotherapy is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Hirudotherapy record says about it on its own.

Hirudotherapy: dosing

There is no standardized "dose" for hirudotherapy. The number of leeches, where they are placed, and how long treatment continues are decided by the treating clinician based on the medical situation, such as how much blood is congested in a tissue flap. This is a medical procedure, not a supplement you take at home.

About Baclofen

What Is Baclofen Used For?

Brand name: Lioresal Injection

Baclofen treats spasticity, which means stiff, tight muscles with spasms. Oral baclofen (tablets, Baclofen oral solution, Ozobax, Baclofen oral suspension, Fleqsuvy, Lyvispah) is used for spasticity from multiple sclerosis, especially flexor spasms with pain, clonus (rhythmic jerking) and muscle rigidity. It may also help some people with spinal cord injuries and other spinal cord diseases.

Intrathecal baclofen (Gablofen, Lioresal Intrathecal and other baclofen injections) is used for severe spasticity. It is given into the fluid around the spinal cord, usually through an implanted pump. It is not for skeletal muscle spasm from rheumatic disorders, and baclofen tablets are not recommended for stroke, cerebral palsy or Parkinson’s disease.

Having Hirudotherapy While Taking Lioresal: Common Questions

Is it safe to have Hirudotherapy while taking Lioresal?
We do not list a known interaction between Hirudotherapy and Lioresal. That does not guarantee the combination is risk-free, so confirm with your pharmacist or doctor — especially if you take other medications or have a health condition.
Do Hirudotherapy and Lioresal have any of the same side effects?
Yes — our sources link each of them separately to 9 of the same effects. That is not an interaction: neither changes how your body handles the other. Does Lioresal interact with any supplements?
Yes. Lioresal has documented interactions with 10 supplements in our database — Hirudotherapy is not one of them. The Lioresal interaction page linked on this page lists every one, ranked by severity.
