Here's the gist: lithium can affect how nerves talk to muscles, and the theory is that pairing it with a muscle relaxer like Lioresal (baclofen) might deepen or stretch out that muscle-relaxing effect. Baclofen isn't a prodrug, so it doesn't need to be switched on. The concern is simply that the two together could pile on, leaving you with extra muscle weakness, drowsiness, or feeling floppy and unsteady.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is theoretical, based on how the two work, not on solid human studies. We also don't know if the low amounts in lithium supplements (like lithium orotate) are even enough to matter. Still, before combining them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on you.

Lithium is a naturally occurring metal that, in prescription form (lithium carbonate or citrate), is an FDA-approved, well-proven treatment for bipolar disorder. What Is Baclofen Used For?

Brand name: Lioresal Injection

Baclofen treats spasticity — the stiffness, muscle spasms, and rigidity that can come from neurological conditions. Oral forms (tablets, solutions, suspension, and granules) are used for spasticity from multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injuries or diseases. They are not intended for muscle spasm caused by rheumatic conditions like arthritis.

Intrathecal baclofen — delivered directly into the fluid around the spinal cord through an implanted pump — is reserved for severe spasticity that hasn't responded to oral baclofen, or when oral doses cause intolerable side effects. Gablofen (intrathecal injection) is specifically indicated for adults and children age 4 and older with spasticity of spinal or cerebral origin.
