Lithium + Nifedipine
Nifedipine brand names: Procardia XL, Adalat PA, Adalat, Nifedin, Nifed PA, and others.
Lithium has a moderate interaction with Nifedipine. Theoretically, taking lithium supplements with calcium channel blockers might reduce lithium levels and might also increase the risk of certain adverse effects.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CALCIUM CHANNEL BLOCKERS
Why this applies to Nifedipine
Nifedipine falls under CALCIUM CHANNEL BLOCKERS — the group Lithium interacts with.
Calcium channel blockers might reduce lithium concentrations. Monitor lithium levels with concurrent use. Calcium channel blockers might also increase the adverse neurological and gastrointestinal adverse effects of lithium. It is unclear if these interactions would occur with the smaller doses found in lithium supplements.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the situation if you're taking nifedipine (like Procardia XL) and thinking about a lithium supplement. The concern runs mostly in one direction: pairing the two might lower how much lithium ends up in your system, and it could also make lithium's side effects worse, things like tremor, nausea, confusion, or feeling unsteady on your feet. Nifedipine itself isn't a prodrug, so it works just fine on its own to relax your blood vessels and ease blood pressure.
I want to be honest that this interaction is theoretical, based on how these drugs behave on paper rather than strong studies in people. It's also unclear whether the tiny doses in over-the-counter lithium orotate matter at all. Still, lithium is a touchy medication, so please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.
- CConsensus.
- DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Nifedipine page
“Nifedipine (Procardia XL, Adalat) relaxes blood vessels to lower blood pressure and ease chest pain, and I would handle this list with real care, since 11 of its 273 entries carry a major rating. Grapefruit is the one to know cold.”

About Lithium
What is Lithium?
- Mood support
- Bipolar disorder (prescription)
- Healthy mental function
- Irritability or stress
- Sleep support
Lithium is a naturally occurring metal that, in prescription form (lithium carbonate or citrate), is an FDA-approved, well-proven treatment for bipolar disorder. Low-dose supplement forms like lithium orotate are sold for mood support, but there is very little reliable evidence that they work, and even small amounts of lithium can be risky for some people. Always talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking any lithium product.
About Nifedipine
What Is Nifedipine Used For?
Brand names: Procardia XL, Adalat PA, Adalat, Nifedin, Nifed PA, Nifed, Procardia, Adalat XL, Adalat CC, Adalat LA, Adalat Retard, Adipine MR, Adipine XL, Cardilate MR, Coracten SR, Coracten XL, Fortipine LA 40, Hypolar Retard 20, Nifedipress MR, Nifopress Retard, Tensipine MR
Nifedipine treats vasospastic angina (chest pain caused by a spasm in a heart artery) and chronic stable angina (chest pain that comes on with effort). It can be used for chronic stable angina when other treatments, such as beta blockers or nitrates, haven't worked well enough or can't be tolerated.
Nifedipine extended-release tablets, including Procardia XL, are also used to treat high blood pressure. The nifedipine capsule label covers the angina uses only.

Nifedipine Is Linked to Lower Levels of 2 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Nifedipine as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Lithium — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
