Here's the gist for this pairing: enalapril (Vasotec, Epaned) is a blood pressure medicine that can change how your kidneys handle lithium. When the two are taken together, your body may hold onto lithium a bit more, which can nudge lithium levels up. Lithium has a narrow safe range, so even a modest rise matters. Signs of too much lithium include nausea, tremor or shakiness, increased thirst and urination, confusion, or unsteadiness.

I want to keep this in perspective. This is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs work, and it's most relevant with prescription-strength lithium. The tiny amounts in lithium orotate supplements may not matter much, but that isn't well studied. Please don't start or stop either one on your own. Just loop in your pharmacist or doctor so they can guide you safely.

What Is Enalapril Used For?

Brand names: Vasotec, Epaned

Enalapril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children older than one month, and to treat symptomatic heart failure. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

It is also used for asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction — when the heart's pumping ability is reduced but the person doesn't yet have obvious heart failure symptoms — to slow the progression to overt heart failure and reduce hospitalizations. Enalapril maleate oral solution (including Epaned) and enalapril maleate tablets (including Vasotec) share these three approved uses.
