Rizatriptan Benzoate falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Lithium interacts with.

Theoretically, taking lithium supplements with serotonergic drugs might both mask and increase the risk of serotonin syndrome.
In a case report, a 67-year-old female with depression and bipolar disorder using lithium in combination with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and other medications developed serotonin syndrome with symptoms of deep tendon hyperreflexia, muscle rigidity, tremor, and hyperthermia. However, agitation, one classical symptom of serotonin syndrome, was lacking. This was thought to be due to masking by lithium toxicity. Lithium can increase serotonin levels, thus, combining serotonergic drugs with lithium might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. It is unclear if this interaction would occur with the smaller doses found in lithium supplements.

Here's the concern when you pair lithium with rizatriptan (Maxalt): both of these can nudge serotonin levels upward in the brain. Stack them together and you raise the chance of serotonin syndrome, a rare but serious reaction. Warning signs include shakiness or tremor, muscle stiffness, a racing heart, sweating, fever, agitation, or feeling confused. One tricky thing noted in the research is that lithium can actually mask some of these signs, so the picture may look less obvious than expected.

Keep in mind this is theoretical, based mostly on how these drugs work rather than strong real-world data, and it's unclear whether the low doses in lithium supplements matter at all. Still, since the combo is rated major, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before using both.

Rizatriptan treats migraine headaches — with or without aura — when they occur. It is approved for adults and for children and teens ages 6 to 17. It is available as a regular tablet (Maxalt, Rizatriptan, Rizatriptan Benzoate), an orally disintegrating tablet (Maxalt, Maxalt-MLT, Rizatriptan Benzoate ODT), and a dissolving oral film placed on the tongue (Rizafilm).

Rizatriptan is for stopping a migraine once it starts — it is not meant to prevent migraines from happening, and it is not approved for cluster headaches. It should only be used after a doctor has confirmed a migraine diagnosis.
