Hollyhock and Ceftriaxone

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Ceftriaxone and Hollyhock in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Ceftriaxone

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Ceftriaxone is filed under 6 classifications — including organic anion transporter 3 (oat3) substrates, organic anion transporter 1 (oat1) substrates, antibiotic drugs. Hollyhock has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being antidiabetes drugs (moderate) — and none of Ceftriaxone’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ceftriaxone page

“Kidney strain is the risk to understand first on this page. Ceftriaxone (Rocephin) is an injectable antibiotic used for serious infections, and three of the 44 supplements on file carry major ratings, two of them because they can harm the kidneys on their own: Siberian cocklebur and asarabacca, which is often contaminated with kidney-d…”

About Hollyhock

What is Hollyhock?

  • Sore throat and cough
  • Digestive upset
  • Soothing irritated skin
  • Mild inflammation
  • Urinary discomfort

Hollyhock is a flowering plant in the mallow family that has been used in traditional medicine, mainly as a soothing (demulcent) remedy for the throat, gut, and skin. Solid human studies are very limited, so its benefits are not well proven. It is generally considered gentle, but you should still talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Alcea rosea · Malvaceae · Flowers, leaves, and roots · Tea, dried flowers, extracts, topical preparations

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Hollyhock is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Hollyhock record says about it on its own.

Hollyhock: dosing

There is no well-established, standardized dose for hollyhock. Traditional use most often involves a tea made from the dried flowers or leaves.Because products vary in strength and form, the safest approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed the recommended amount.

About Ceftriaxone Injection

What Is Ceftriaxone Injection Used For?

Brand name: Rocephin

Ceftriaxone Injection is used to treat bacterial infections in many parts of the body, including the lungs (lower respiratory tract infections), urinary tract, skin, bones and joints, abdomen, and bloodstream (septicemia). In addition, a single dose of ceftriaxone may be given before certain surgeries — such as hysterectomy, gallbladder surgery, or coronary artery bypass surgery — to help prevent postoperative infection.
