Here's the gist with acamprosate (Campral) and karaya gum. Because karaya gum is a bulk-forming fiber that swells into a gel in your gut, it can grab onto a pill and slow or shift how much of it gets absorbed. With acamprosate this is only a theoretical concern based on how fiber behaves, and it's rated minor. Acamprosate already absorbs poorly and slowly, so anything that traps it could lower your blood levels a little and make it work less well at curbing the urge to drink.

Acamprosate isn't a prodrug, so there's no flip here: less getting in simply means less effect, not more side effects. To stay safe, a simple gap helps. Take your acamprosate first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before your karaya gum, and check with your pharmacist if you have questions.

As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel conditions.

Acamprosate Calcium delayed-release tablets are used to help people with alcohol dependence maintain abstinence — meaning they are used to support staying sober, not to help someone stop drinking in the first place. The medication is started after a person has already gone through alcohol withdrawal and is alcohol-free.

Acamprosate Calcium delayed-release tablets are meant to be part of a broader treatment plan that includes counseling and other psychosocial support. They have not been shown to be effective in people who have not yet detoxed or achieved abstinence before starting treatment.
