Here's the good news for this particular pairing: Campath (alemtuzumab) is given as an injection, not a pill you swallow. The concern with a bulk-forming fiber like karaya gum is that it can soak up and slow the absorption of medicines you take by mouth. Since alemtuzumab goes straight into your body by infusion or injection, it never passes through your gut, so the fiber simply can't interfere with how much you absorb.

This warning is really a general, theoretical note for oral drugs, and it doesn't apply in a meaningful way here. That said, karaya gum still needs plenty of water and isn't right for everyone, so check with your pharmacist or oncology team before starting it.

Karaya gum is a natural plant gum from the Sterculia tree that is mostly used as a bulk-forming laxative and as a thickener or adhesive in food, dental, and ostomy products. As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel conditions.

What Is Alemtuzumab Injection (Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia) Used For?

Brand name: Campath

Alemtuzumab (brand name Lemtrada) is approved for adults with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) — including relapsing-remitting MS and active secondary progressive MS. Because it carries serious risks, it is generally reserved for people who have already tried at least two other MS medications without adequate results.

It is not recommended for people with clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), a first episode of MS-like symptoms, due to its risk profile.
