Here's the gist when you pair karaya gum with amantadine. Karaya gum is a bulk-forming fiber, and when it swells into a gel in your gut it can grab onto pills and slow or change how they get absorbed. With amantadine, that mostly raises a theoretical worry that you might absorb a little less, which could make it less effective for your Parkinson's symptoms or movement control.

The good news is this is a minor concern based on how these things behave in theory, not on strong studies. A simple fix usually keeps them apart: take your amantadine first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the karaya gum. If anything feels off with your symptoms, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Karaya gum is a natural plant gum from the Sterculia tree that is mostly used as a bulk-forming laxative and as a thickener or adhesive in food, dental, and ostomy products. As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel conditions.

What Is Amantadine Used For?

Brand names: Symmetrel, Gocovri, Osmolex ER

Amantadine capsules, tablets, and oral solution are used to prevent or treat uncomplicated respiratory illness caused by influenza A virus strains. They are also used in the treatment of parkinsonism and drug-induced extrapyramidal reactions (movement problems caused by certain medications).

Gocovri (an extended-release amantadine capsule) has two specific approved uses: treating dyskinesia (uncontrolled, involuntary movements) in people with Parkinson's disease who are taking levodopa-based therapy, and as an add-on treatment to levodopa/carbidopa for people experiencing "off" episodes (periods when Parkinson's symptoms return or worsen).
