ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Benactyzine, Meprobamate
Benactyzine, Meprobamate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Karaya Gum interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with Deprol (which combines benactyzine and meprobamate) and karaya gum. This isn't about how your body breaks the medicine down. It's simply a physical thing happening in your gut. Because karaya gum is a fiber that swells into a thick gel when it hits water, it can grab onto a pill sitting next to it and slightly change how much gets absorbed. That could mean a touch less effect (your anxiety or low mood not as well controlled) or, less likely, a bit more (extra drowsiness or dizziness).
The good news: this is theoretical, rated minor, and easy to sidestep. A simple fix is to take your Deprol first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the karaya gum. If you have questions, your pharmacist can confirm the best timing for you.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Benactyzine, Meprobamate page
“Meprobamate does the heavy sedating in Deprol (benactyzine is its partner), and that is why 78 of the 105 supplements and herbs on this list demand real caution. They pile extra sedation on top of the drug's own, and most of the seven major-rated interactions sit in that group.”

About Karaya Gum
What is Karaya Gum?
- Constipation (bulk-forming laxative)
- Appetite and weight management (bulking agent)
- Dental adhesive/denture fixative
- Skin barrier for ostomy appliances
- Food thickening and stabilizing
Karaya gum is a natural plant gum from the Sterculia tree that is mostly used as a bulk-forming laxative and as a thickener or adhesive in food, dental, and ostomy products. As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel conditions.
