Here's the simple version: karaya gum is a bulky fiber that swells into a gel in your stomach and intestines. When you swallow a capsule of benzonatate (Tessalon) too close to that fiber, the gel can partly trap the medicine and slow or reduce how much your body absorbs. In theory that could blunt how well your cough is calmed.

Honestly, this is a theoretical concern based on how fiber works in the gut, not something well documented for this specific cough medicine, and it's rated minor. The easy fix is timing: take your benzonatate first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the karaya gum. Benzonatate must always be swallowed whole, never chewed. Karaya gum is a natural plant gum from the Sterculia tree that is mostly used as a bulk-forming laxative and as a thickener or adhesive in food, dental, and ostomy products. As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. Benzonatate capsules are used for the symptomatic relief of cough. This applies to all benzonatate capsule products — including Benzonatate 100 mg and Benzonatate 200 mg formulations taken by mouth.

It is intended to reduce the urge to cough when coughing is disruptive or uncomfortable. It does not treat the underlying cause of the cough.
