Here's the good news on this pairing: dinoprostone (Prepidil) isn't a pill you swallow. It's a gel your doctor places directly into the cervix to help ready it for labor. Because it works right at the spot it's applied and doesn't have to be absorbed from your stomach or intestines, a bulk-forming fiber like karaya gum sitting in your gut really has no good way to interfere with it.

The warning on file is a general, theoretical one about fiber slowing or changing how oral medicines get absorbed. That just doesn't apply to a medication given this way. Karaya gum is a natural plant gum from the Sterculia tree that is mostly used as a bulk-forming laxative and as a thickener or adhesive in food, dental, and ostomy products. As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel conditions.

What Is Dinoprostone Used For?

Brand name: Prepidil

Dinoprostone is used to ripen (soften and open) an unripe cervix in pregnant women who are at or near term and need labor to be induced for medical or obstetric reasons.

Cervidil (vaginal insert) is indicated for initiating or continuing cervical ripening in pregnant women at or near term who have a medical or obstetrical reason for labor induction. Prepidil (vaginal gel) is indicated for ripening an unfavorable cervix in pregnant women at or near term who have a medical or obstetrical need for labor induction.
