Here's the simple version: karaya gum is a bulky fiber that swells into a gel in your gut. When you swallow a pill like mobocertinib (Exkivity) too close to that gel, the fiber can trap some of the drug and change how much your body absorbs. The effect could go either way, but the main worry is that you might absorb a little less, which could mean your cancer medicine works less well than intended.

The good news is this is a theoretical concern based on how fiber laxatives behave, not strong proof of a real problem with this exact drug. An easy fix is timing: take your mobocertinib first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the karaya gum. Please run any fiber laxative past your oncology team or pharmacist before starting it.

As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. What Is Mobocertinib Used For?

  • Mobocertinib is used to treat a certain type of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that cannot be removed by surgery and has spread to other parts of the body either during or after treatment with platinum chemotherapy medications. Mobocertinib is in a class of medications called kinase inhibitors. It works by blocking the action of the abnormal protein that signals cancer cells to multiply. This helps stop or slow the spread of cancer cells and may help shrink tumors.
