L-cysteine + Odevixibat

Odevixibat brand name: Bylvay.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between L-cysteine and Odevixibat in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the label for Odevixibat states a food rule worth keeping to.

L-cysteine and Odevixibat

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Odevixibat and L-cysteine in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Odevixibat

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Odevixibat is filed under a single classification — oral drugs. L-cysteine has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being antidiabetes drugs (moderate) — and none of Odevixibat’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What Odevixibat’s Own FDA Label Lists

This is not an interaction — none of it involves L-cysteine. These are the most notable effects listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Odevixibat’s own FDA label, for the medication by itself. From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Odevixibat. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 350 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Odevixibat that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. L-cysteine’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no L-cysteine side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that L-cysteine has no side effects.

L-cysteine in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy And Lactation Likely Safe

When used orally in amounts found in foods. There is insufficient reliable information available about the safety of amounts greater than those found in foods; avoid use. Some research suggests that taking L-cysteine during lactation increases levels of free L-cysteine in breastmilk. However, these levels are lower than those found in some commercial hydrolyzed protein infant formulas.

How to take them

Some Odevixibat Products Have a Food Rule — L-cysteine Should Not Break It

At least one FDA label for a product containing Odevixibat says to take it with food. If you take L-cysteine on an empty stomach out of habit, keep them separate — and take Odevixibat with a meal where the label says to.

This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two Odevixibat products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones. The label we read is quoted below — check the directions on your own box or bottle, or ask your pharmacist, for how to take the exact product you were given.

( 2.2 ) Preparation and Administration Instructions Administer BYLVAY in the morning with a meal.

From the Dosage and Administration section of the FDA label we read for Odevixibat — where that label names a specific product, the instruction is that product's. Read the label on DailyMed ›

A food rule is not an interaction — it is about how much of the medicine you absorb. The directions that came with your own product, and your pharmacist, outrank anything on this page.

About L-cysteine

What is L-cysteine?

  • Antioxidant support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Liver support
  • Respiratory and mucus thinning
  • General protein/amino acid supplementation

L-cysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid your body uses to make proteins and the antioxidant glutathione. Most people get enough from food, and supplements are usually well tolerated, but strong evidence supporting specific health benefits from extra L-cysteine is limited. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a health condition.

Amino acid (not a plant part) · Capsules, tablets, powder; also available as N-acetylcysteine (NAC)

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether L-cysteine is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our L-cysteine record says about it on its own.

L-cysteine: dosing

There is no official standardized dose of L-cysteine established for general supplement use. Products vary widely in strength, and much of the dosing research actually involves NAC rather than plain L-cysteine.The safest approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed the recommended amount. Higher doses have not been well studied and may increase the risk of side effects.

About Odevixibat

What Is Odevixibat Used For?

Brand name: Bylvay

Bylvay (odevixibat) capsules are used to treat pruritus (intense, chronic itching caused by bile buildup in the body) in patients with two rare liver conditions. For progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC), Bylvay is approved for patients 3 months of age and older. For Alagille syndrome (ALGS), Bylvay is approved for patients 12 months of age and older.

There is an important limitation: Bylvay is not recommended for a specific subgroup of PFIC type 2 patients who have certain genetic variants that result in a non-functional or completely absent bile salt export pump (BSEP) protein. A prescriber can determine whether this applies to your child.
