L-cysteine + Metformin
Metformin brand names: Glucophage, Metformin.
L-cysteine has a moderate interaction with Metformin. Theoretically, taking L-cysteine supplements with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
Why this applies to Metformin
Metformin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group L-cysteine interacts with.
Animal research suggests that L-cysteine can have hypoglycemic effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: L-cysteine may have a mild blood-sugar-lowering effect of its own, at least in animal studies. So if you take it on top of metformin, the two could theoretically add together and push your blood sugar a little lower than expected. That can show up as shakiness, sweating, dizziness, hunger, or feeling foggy.
I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes from lab and animal research, not human trials, so it's more of a theoretical caution than something we see often. Metformin alone rarely causes low blood sugar, which is reassuring. Still, if you'd like to try L-cysteine, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor, and keep an eye on your glucose readings when you start.

These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers L-cysteine or Metformin, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Metformin
This page covers L-cysteine only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Metformin page lists 258 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Siberian Cocklebur (major), Acai (moderate), African Wild Potato (moderate) and Agaricus Mushroom (moderate).
By severity: 2 major · 217 moderate · 39 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Metformin page
“Siberian cocklebur is the ingredient I most want anyone taking metformin (Glucophage) to know about. It has caused severe low blood sugar in people, documented in humans, and it should not be combined with any glucose-lowering medication.”

About L-cysteine
What is L-cysteine?
- Antioxidant support
- Skin and hair health
- Liver support
- Respiratory and mucus thinning
- General protein/amino acid supplementation
L-cysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid your body uses to make proteins and the antioxidant glutathione. Most people get enough from food, and supplements are usually well tolerated, but strong evidence supporting specific health benefits from extra L-cysteine is limited. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a health condition.

Metformin Is Linked to Lower Levels of 4 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Metformin as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with L-cysteine — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
