L-cysteine + Glipizide
Glipizide brand names: Glucotrol, Glucotrol XL.
L-cysteine has a moderate interaction with Glipizide. Theoretically, taking L-cysteine supplements with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
Why this applies to Glipizide
Glipizide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group L-cysteine interacts with.
Animal research suggests that L-cysteine can have hypoglycemic effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: glipizide already pushes your pancreas to release more insulin, which lowers your blood sugar. The concern is that L-cysteine may also nudge blood sugar downward, so stacking the two could, in theory, drop it a little too far. That might show up as shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, dizziness, hunger, or feeling foggy or irritable.
I want to be honest about how solid this is, though. The signal comes from animal and lab research only, not human studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than something we see causing problems day to day. If you take L-cysteine alongside glipizide, it's reasonable to keep an eye on your home glucose readings and let your pharmacist or doctor know before starting it.

These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers L-cysteine or Glipizide, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Glipizide page
“Glipizide (Glucotrol, Glucotrol XL) lowers blood sugar by prompting the pancreas to release more insulin, and that same power is why I read its supplement list with real seriousness. Of the 307 ingredients on file, 239 also act on blood glucose, so stacking them can drive sugar dangerously low.”

We hold 1 real supplement products containing L-cysteine, each one broken down to its full ingredient list — and combination products often carry several ingredients besides L-cysteine. Your product may carry other ingredients that interact with Glipizide too, on top of L-cysteine — and those would not show on this page. About L-cysteine
What is L-cysteine?
- Antioxidant support
- Skin and hair health
- Liver support
- Respiratory and mucus thinning
- General protein/amino acid supplementation
L-cysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid your body uses to make proteins and the antioxidant glutathione. Most people get enough from food, and supplements are usually well tolerated, but strong evidence supporting specific health benefits from extra L-cysteine is limited. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a health condition.
About Glipizide
What Is Glipizide Used For?

Glipizide Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Glipizide as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with L-cysteine — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
