Amikacin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lacticaseibacillus Casei interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Lacticaseibacillus casei with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. casei.
L. casei preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. casei preparations by at least two hours.

Here's the simple version: this interaction works in one direction only. Amikacin is a strong antibiotic that kills bacteria, and the probiotic L. casei is, well, live bacteria. So if you take them at the same time, the amikacin may wipe out a good chunk of those friendly organisms before they ever do their job. That makes the probiotic less effective, not the antibiotic.

The good news is this won't make your amikacin weaker or cause extra side effects, and it's based on theory rather than hard studies. If you want the probiotic to have a fair shot, a common tip is to space it a couple of hours apart from your antibiotic. Since amikacin is given by injection, your care team can help you time things, so just ask your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Amikacin Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand names: Amikin, Arikayce

Arikayce is approved for adults with refractory Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) lung disease — a serious bacterial lung infection that has not responded to at least 6 consecutive months of a standard multidrug antibiotic regimen. It is used as part of a combination treatment plan, not on its own.

This approval is limited: Arikayce is intended only for adults who have few or no other treatment options. It is not recommended for patients whose MAC lung disease has not yet failed standard therapy.
