Lactobacillus Gasseri and Bacitracin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Bacitracin

Bacitracin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactobacillus Gasseri interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus gasseri with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. gasseri.
Lactobacillus gasseri preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. gasseri preparations by at least two hours.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: this isn't about the probiotic changing how Bacitracin works. It's the other way around. Bacitracin is an antibiotic, and antibiotics kill bacteria. Since Lactobacillus gasseri is itself a live, friendly bacterium, taking the two close together could knock out some of the probiotic before it ever gets a chance to help you.

The good news is that most Bacitracin people use is an ointment for cuts, scrapes, and burns, so it stays on the skin and barely gets into the body. In that case there's really nothing to worry about with an oral probiotic. If you're ever taking an antibiotic by mouth, the usual tip is to space the probiotic about two hours apart. This is a theoretical concern, so check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

About Lactobacillus Gasseri

What is Lactobacillus Gasseri?

  • Digestive health
  • Weight and belly fat management
  • Vaginal and urinary health
  • Bloating and gut discomfort
  • General immune support

Lactobacillus gasseri is a 'friendly' probiotic bacterium found naturally in the human gut, mouth, and vaginal tract, and in some fermented foods. Early research suggests it may help with digestion, weight management, and vaginal health, but the evidence is limited and far from conclusive. It is generally well tolerated in healthy people, but anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding, or has a weakened immune system should talk to a pharmacist or doctor first.
